Discovery of Dysnomia

10 September 2005

Dysnomia is the only known moon of the dwarf planet Eris. It was discovered by a team led by the astronomer Mike Brown, using the Keck telescope in Hawaii and its laser-guided adaptive optics system, which allowed astronomers to see the faint satellite near the bright planet. Observing its orbit made it possible to calculate the mass of Eris, showing that Eris is more massive than Pluto. The moon was named for the daughter of the Greek goddess Eris, the spirit of lawlessness, and it is a faint companion at a very great distance from the Sun.
