Launch of Voyager 2

20 August 1977

Voyager 2 is a NASA space probe launched from Cape Canaveral about two weeks before its twin, Voyager 1, to explore the outer planets. It took advantage of a rare alignment of the planets to make a grand tour, passing Jupiter in 1979, Saturn in 1981, Uranus in 1986 and Neptune in 1989. It remains the only spacecraft to have visited Uranus and Neptune, and it revealed new moons and rings, the geysers on Neptune's moon Triton and the unusual tilted magnetic fields of the ice giants. In 2018 it crossed the heliopause and entered interstellar space. Like Voyager 1, it carries a golden record with sounds and images of Earth.
