Launch of SELENE

14 September 2007

SELENE, nicknamed Kaguya after a princess in Japanese folklore, was a lunar orbiter launched by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency on an H-IIA rocket. It was Japan's largest lunar mission since the Apollo programme and carried instruments to map the Moon's composition, gravity field, topography and magnetic field, as well as high-definition cameras. Its images included views of the Earth rising over the lunar horizon, filmed in high definition, which became famous. It also released two small relay satellites to help measure the far side's gravity. After about a year and a half of operations, the spacecraft was deliberately crashed into the Moon's surface in June 2009.
