Free City of Danzig

from 15 November 1920 to 1 September 1939

The Free City of Danzig was a semi-autonomous city-state created after the First World War under the Treaty of Versailles, comprising the port city now known as Gdansk and surrounding territory. It was placed under the protection of the League of Nations, with Poland given control of its foreign affairs and customs and the right to use the port, even though the population was overwhelmingly German. Tensions between the German majority and Poland grew, and after the Nazi Party won control of the city government in the 1930s, the city increasingly acted in line with Germany. German demands for the return of Danzig were a pretext for the invasion of Poland, and the war began with the German bombardment of the Polish garrison at Westerplatte.
