The Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic was a constituent republic of the Soviet Union, created after the Red Army invaded Georgia in 1921 and overthrew the independent Georgian Democratic Republic, which had been led by Mensheviks. For some years, it was joined with Armenia and Azerbaijan in the Transcaucasian federation, and it became a separate Soviet republic in 1936. Georgians were prominent in Soviet history, as Joseph Stalin and Lavrentiy Beria were both born there. The republic experienced growing nationalist protest in the 1980s, and on 9 April 1989 a demonstration in Tbilisi was violently dispersed by Soviet troops. Georgia declared independence in April 1991 and became fully independent at the end of the Soviet Union.
