The Polish men's national football team played its first international match in 1921, in Budapest against Hungary, shortly after Poland had regained independence. Between the wars, it qualified for the 1938 World Cup in France, where it lost a thrilling match to Brazil that went to extra time. The golden era came in the 1970s and early 1980s, when the team won Olympic gold in 1972, finished third at the 1974 World Cup and again in 1982, with players such as Kazimierz Deyna, Grzegorz Lato and Zbigniew Boniek. In more recent years, the team has been led by striker Robert Lewandowski, one of the most prolific scorers of his generation, and qualified for several World Cups and European Championships.
