Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic

from 5 December 1936 to 9 October 1991

The Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic was one of the fifteen republics of the Soviet Union, covering the vast steppes of Central Asia. It was created within the USSR as an autonomous republic in the 1920s and became a full union republic in 1936, with its capital at Alma-Ata. Under Soviet rule the Kazakh population suffered terribly from collectivisation and famine in the early 1930s, and later the republic was the site of Khrushchev's Virgin Lands campaign, the Baikonur Cosmodrome and the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site. Protests in Alma-Ata in December 1986 were among the first signs of unrest in the Soviet Union. Kazakhstan declared independence in December 1991.
