Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic

from 29 November 1920 to 25 December 1991

The Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic was one of the fifteen union republics of the Soviet Union. It was established when Soviet power was proclaimed in Armenia in late 1920, after the short-lived independent Republic of Armenia collapsed under pressure from Turkish and Soviet forces. From 1922 to 1936 it formed part of the Transcaucasian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic along with Georgia and Azerbaijan, and became a separate republic in 1936. Under Soviet rule it industrialised and its capital, Yerevan, grew considerably. In 1988 it was hit by the Spitak earthquake and became caught up in conflict with Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh. Armenia declared independence in 1991.
