Vichy France

from 10 July 1940 to 29 August 1944

Vichy France was the French state that existed under Marshal Philippe Petain after the defeat of France by Germany in 1940. After the armistice, the parliament met in the spa town of Vichy and voted full powers to Petain, ending the Third Republic. The regime, which controlled the unoccupied southern part of the country and the colonies, promoted an authoritarian and conservative National Revolution and collaborated with Nazi Germany. It passed anti-Jewish laws and its police helped to arrest and deport Jews to the death camps, including in the 1942 Vel d'Hiv roundup in Paris. Germany occupied the whole of France in November 1942, and Vichy collapsed after the liberation of France in 1944.
