Creation of Java

1995

Java is an object-oriented programming language developed at Sun Microsystems by a team led by James Gosling, which started work in 1991 under the name Oak. It was publicly released in 1995 and promoted with the slogan write once, run anywhere, because programs are compiled into bytecode that runs on a virtual machine available for many types of computers. Early on it became known for applets, small programs that ran in web browsers, but its greatest success came in business software, server applications and, later, in Android apps. Oracle acquired Sun in 2010 and continues to develop the language. Java remains one of the most widely used programming languages in the world.
