Founding of The Left in the European Parliament - GUE/NGL

6 January 1995

The Left in the European Parliament, long known by the initials GUE/NGL, is a political group made up of left-wing and radical left members of the European Parliament. It was formed after the 1995 enlargement of the European Union, when members from the Nordic countries that joined, whose parties were green and left-wing, came together with the existing communist and left-wing groups. It brings together parties as different as the German Die Linke, the French La France Insoumise, the Spanish Podemos and Sinn Féin from Ireland. The group is critical of EU economic policy and generally opposes austerity, privatization and militarism, though its members differ on the future of the EU.
