Founding of Union of South American Nations

23 May 2008

The Union of South American Nations was created by a treaty signed in Brasilia, with a vision of integrating the continent politically, economically and in defence and infrastructure. It brought together twelve countries and drew on the earlier Mercosur and Andean Community. Its headquarters were in Quito, and it set up bodies such as a South American Defence Council. Political divisions among members, especially over Venezuela, and disputes over leadership caused the organisation to stall, and from 2018 several countries withdrew or suspended membership. Some of them formed a rival body, Prosur, and a few later returned to the union.
