Release of Grand Theft Auto IV

29 April 2008

Grand Theft Auto IV is an open-world action-adventure game developed by Rockstar North and set in Liberty City, a fictionalized version of New York City. Its protagonist, Niko Bellic, is an Eastern European immigrant drawn into crime by his cousin Roman, who has promised him a life of wealth. It was the first main game in the series for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and used the new RAGE engine with realistic physics and animation. Critics praised its story, which satirized the American Dream, and its detailed city, and it broke sales records on its release. It was followed by two expansions, The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony, and by Grand Theft Auto V in 2013.
