Discovery of MOA-2007-BLG-192Lb

30 May 2008

MOA-2007-BLG-192Lb is a low-mass exoplanet found by gravitational microlensing, a technique that detects planets through the way their gravity briefly magnifies the light of a more distant star. It was found by the Microlensing Observations in Astrophysics collaboration, a group using a telescope in New Zealand, and by other telescopes that followed up the event. It is one of the lowest-mass planets detected by this method, only a few times the mass of Earth, and it orbits a very faint host, probably a very low-mass star or a brown dwarf. The discovery suggested that small planets are common around faint stars, and microlensing is one of the few methods able to find them far from Earth.
