Launch of GitHub

10 April 2008

GitHub is a web platform for hosting and collaborating on software projects, built around the Git version control system created by Linus Torvalds. It was developed by Tom Preston-Werner, Chris Wanstrath, PJ Hyett and Scott Chacon, and added features such as pull requests, issue tracking and the ability to follow other developers, which gave rise to the idea of social coding. It became the main home of open-source software and is used by millions of developers and by companies of all sizes. Microsoft acquired GitHub in 2018 for a reported 7.5 billion dollars. More recently the site has added AI coding assistance under the name Copilot.
