Elizabeth II was born on 21 April 1926 in 17 Bruton Street. The Queen of the United Kingdom and head of the Commonwealth, Elizabeth II became queen at the age of twenty-five on the death of her father, George VI, in 1952, and was crowned in 1953. Her reign of seventy years was the longest of any British monarch, and she was a symbol of continuity through decades of social change, the end of the empire and the growth of the Commonwealth. During the Second World War she had trained as a driver and mechanic in the army. She celebrated her Platinum Jubilee in 2022 and died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, and was succeeded by her son, Charles III.
