Introduction of Estonian kroon

1928

The Estonian kroon was introduced as the currency of independent Estonia, replacing the Estonian mark that had been used since 1918. It was divided into 100 senti and tied to gold at first. After the Soviet annexation of Estonia in 1940 it was withdrawn and replaced by the Soviet ruble. When Estonia regained independence, the kroon was reintroduced in 1992 and fixed to the German mark, a policy that helped the country control inflation and build a reputation for monetary stability. Estonia replaced the kroon with the euro in 2011.
