Birth of Dario Fo

24 March 1926

Dario Fo was born on 24 March 1926 in Sangiano. An Italian playwright, actor and director, Dario Fo was a satirist whose farces such as Accidental Death of an Anarchist and Can't Pay? Won't Pay mixed slapstick with sharp political critique. Together with his wife Franca Rame, he formed theatre companies that performed in factories and squares, and he revived the tradition of the medieval jester and the commedia dell'arte in works like Mistero Buffo. His plays were often banned or contested by the authorities and the Church. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1997 for emulating the jesters of the Middle Ages.
