Founding of Interpol

7 September 1923

Interpol, the International Criminal Police Organization, began as the International Criminal Police Commission, which was set up at a congress in Vienna to promote cooperation between police forces of different countries. After the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany in 1938 it came under Nazi control and was moved to Berlin, and it was re-established in Paris after the Second World War. The name Interpol came from its telegraphic address. Its headquarters have been in Lyon, France, since 1989. Interpol does not have its own officers with power of arrest, but it connects the police of nearly all countries, shares databases and issues notices such as the Red Notice for fugitives, while its constitution forbids involvement in political, military or religious matters.
