Benelux is the economic union of Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. Its origins lie in a customs convention signed in London by the three governments in exile during the Second World War, as they planned for the postwar period, and the arrangement took effect in 1948. A fuller economic union treaty was signed in 1958. The three small countries abolished most trade barriers between them and coordinated their economic policies, and their experience served as a model for wider European integration. The same three countries were founding members of the European Coal and Steel Community and the European Economic Community, and the Benelux Union still cooperates on matters such as security and the environment.
