Founding of Shenzhen Stock Exchange

1 December 1990

The Shenzhen Stock Exchange is one of the two main stock exchanges of mainland China, together with the one in Shanghai, and it opened in the southern city of Shenzhen, which was then the first of China's special economic zones, an experiment in market-oriented reform near Hong Kong. Its start was part of the process by which China brought back stock markets, after decades during which they were abolished under communism. The exchange lists many technology and private companies, and its ChiNext board, which opened in 2009, is intended for innovative start-ups. Shares can be bought by overseas investors through a link with the Hong Kong exchange, and the city of Shenzhen is a hub for technology companies like Tencent and Huawei.
