Founding of Google

4 September 1998

Google was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, two doctoral students at Stanford University, who had developed a search engine algorithm called PageRank that ranked web pages by how many other pages linked to them. The company was incorporated in September 1998 and began in a garage in Menlo Park, California. The name is a play on googol, the number one followed by a hundred zeros. Google's search results were better than those of its rivals, and its advertising system generated huge revenue. It went public in 2004, and added services such as Gmail, Maps, Chrome, Android and YouTube. In 2015 it was reorganised under a holding company called Alphabet.
