Construction of Oslo Airport

8 October 1998

Oslo Airport, also called Oslo Gardermoen, is the main international airport of Norway, located north of the capital in the municipality of Ullensaker. It opened in October 1998, replacing Oslo's former airport at Fornebu, which was too small and too close to the city. The site has long been used for aviation, and was a military airfield from the early twentieth century. The airport is a hub for the airlines SAS and Norwegian, and it is connected to the city by a fast train, the Flytoget, and by a high-speed rail line. Its terminal building, with a wooden roof, is admired for its design, and it handles the great majority of Norway's international traffic.
