Founding of Europol

1 October 1998

Europol, the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation, supports police forces of the member states in fighting serious international crime and terrorism. It has its headquarters in The Hague, in the Netherlands. The agency arose from earlier cooperation and from the Europol Convention, which came into force in 1998, and it became fully operational the following year. Europol does not have its own arresting powers, but it collects and analyses information, coordinates investigations and supports operations against drug trafficking, human smuggling, cybercrime and terrorism. Its powers were expanded in later years, and it became a full EU agency under a new regulation in 2017.
