Founding of European Environment Agency

7 May 1990

The European Environment Agency is an agency of the European Union, based in Copenhagen, with the task of providing reliable and independent information on the state of the environment. It was set up by a European regulation adopted in 1990, and it became fully operational in the middle of the following decade. The agency does not make laws itself, but collects and analyzes data from member countries on air and water quality, climate change, biodiversity, waste and other topics, and publishes regular reports on the state of Europe's environment. Its work supports European policymaking and informs the public. Membership extends beyond the European Union to include several other European countries.
