First flight of Sukhoi Su-34

13 April 1990

The Sukhoi Su-34 is a Russian twin-engine strike fighter, developed from the Su-27 air-superiority fighter as a replacement for the Su-24. Its first prototype flew in 1990, in a version then known as the Su-27IB. Its most unusual feature is the wide cockpit in which the pilot and navigator sit side by side, with a galley and toilet so that the crew can fly missions lasting many hours, and the aircraft has a distinctive nose shape, which earned it the nickname Platypus. After a long development delayed by the end of the Soviet Union and funding shortages, it entered service in the Russian air force in the 2010s. It has been used in Syria and in the war in Ukraine, where it has carried guided glide bombs.
