Creation of Windows 3.0

22 May 1990

Windows 3.0 was the third major release of Microsoft Windows and the first version to achieve widespread commercial success. It introduced an improved graphical interface with Program Manager and File Manager, better memory handling in an enhanced mode that allowed several DOS programs to run at once and made use of memory beyond 640 kilobytes, and support for 16-color VGA graphics. Together with applications such as Excel and Word for Windows, it established Windows as a mainstream platform for IBM-compatible personal computers and sold millions of copies within a few months. Windows 3.1, with TrueType fonts, followed in 1992, and Windows for Workgroups added networking.
