Founding of Central Bank of Russia

13 July 1990

The Central Bank of the Russian Federation was founded in the summer of 1990 as the Russian Republic's own bank, on the basis of the republic's branch of the Soviet State Bank, as Russia asserted its autonomy within the Soviet Union. After the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, it took over the functions of the central bank for the new state and took charge of issuing the ruble. It faced very high inflation in the 1990s and the financial crisis of 1998, when Russia defaulted on its debt and devalued the ruble. Under Elvira Nabiullina, who became governor in 2013, it was credited with stabilising the financial system. Its headquarters are in Moscow.
