Founding of Eurocontrol

1960

Eurocontrol, the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation, is an intergovernmental organization whose purpose is to harmonize and coordinate air traffic management in Europe, with its headquarters in Brussels. It was founded by a convention signed by six western European countries, and its membership has since grown to include some forty states. Eurocontrol operates the Network Manager, which coordinates flight plans and traffic flows across the continent to reduce delays, and it runs an upper-airspace control center in Maastricht in the Netherlands. It also works on technology and standards, including the Single European Sky project of the European Union, to make air travel safer, more efficient and less polluting.
