La Tchadienne is the national anthem of Chad, adopted when the country gained independence from France. Its words were written by Louis Gidrol and a group of his students, and the music was composed by Paul Villard. The French text calls on the people of Chad to rise and to build their country with courage and faith, and celebrates the land and the national spirit. The anthem is sung in French, which is, with Arabic, one of the country's official languages. It is played at official ceremonies, and it expresses the aspirations of a large and diverse nation in the heart of Africa as it began self-government.
