Construction of Shamakhy Astrophysical Observatory

1960

The Shamakhy Astrophysical Observatory is the main astronomical observatory of Azerbaijan, located in the mountains near the town of Shamakhi, at a high and clear site. It was founded around 1960 by the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences, and it was named after the medieval Azerbaijani scholar Nasir al-Din al-Tusi, who built the famous observatory at Maragha. Its largest instrument is a telescope with a mirror two metres in diameter, made in East Germany and installed in the 1960s. The observatory's work includes the study of stars, the Sun and galaxies, and it has been a regional centre for the training of astronomers. Shamakhi had been a centre of learning in earlier centuries too.
