L'Aube Nouvelle, meaning The Dawn of a New Day, is the national anthem of Benin, a country in West Africa that was formerly the French colony of Dahomey. It was composed around the time of independence in 1960, when the new state needed national symbols. The words speak of the dawn of a free nation and call on its people to build the country in unity and courage. The anthem is sung in French, the official language.
