Construction of Hollywood Walk of Fame

1960

The Hollywood Walk of Fame consists of thousands of terrazzo and brass stars set into the pavement of Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street, each honouring a person from film, television, music, radio or live performance. The idea came from the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which wanted to maintain the glamorous reputation of the district, and the first stars were laid in the early 1960s. Honorees are chosen by a committee, and sponsors pay a fee that supports upkeep of the walk. The ceremony for each new star draws crowds of fans and press, and the walk has become one of Los Angeles's most visited attractions.
