Establishment of Jiuzhaigou Valley

1978

Jiuzhaigou Valley is a nature reserve in the mountains of northern Sichuan in China, known for its turquoise lakes, terraced pools, waterfalls and forests. The colours of the water come from minerals and from the clarity of the water, and many of the pools are held back by natural travertine dams. The name, meaning Nine Village Valley, comes from the Tibetan villages located in the valley. The reserve was established in the late 1970s, opened to tourists in the 1980s, and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. It suffered damage from an earthquake in 2017, which closed it for a time, and it has since reopened with limits on visitor numbers.
