Creation of TeX

1978

TeX is a typesetting system created by the computer scientist Donald Knuth of Stanford University, who was dissatisfied with the quality of the printing of the second edition of his book The Art of Computer Programming. It is particularly good at setting mathematical formulas, and uses a markup language in which authors describe the structure of the text. Knuth designed it to produce the same output on any computer, and it is famous for its stability, with version numbers that approach the number pi. The macro package LaTeX, developed by Leslie Lamport on top of TeX, became the standard way of writing scientific papers in mathematics, physics and computer science.
