Founding of Central Bank of Azerbaijan

11 February 1992

The Central Bank of Azerbaijan is the central bank of the Republic of Azerbaijan, based in Baku. It was established soon after the country regained independence from the Soviet Union, to take over the functions of the Soviet state bank in the republic. One of its first tasks was to introduce a national currency, the manat, which replaced the Soviet rouble. The bank is responsible for monetary policy, regulation of the financial sector and management of the country's foreign reserves, in an economy heavily dependent on oil and gas exports. It has had to respond to sharp changes in energy prices, including devaluations of the manat in 2015.
