Khojaly Massacre

26 February 1992

The Khojaly massacre was the killing of Azerbaijani civilians from the town of Khojaly in Nagorno-Karabakh, during the war between Armenia and Azerbaijan that followed the breakup of the Soviet Union. After Armenian forces captured the town, residents trying to flee were attacked by armed men as they moved toward Aghdam. Several hundred civilians were killed, according to Azerbaijani and international accounts, and many others were taken captive. Responsibility is described differently by the two sides, and Human Rights Watch and other organisations reported serious violations. The event remains a major subject of commemoration in Azerbaijan.
