Founding of Premier League

20 February 1992

The Premier League is the top division of English men's professional football, founded in February 1992 when the clubs of the old First Division broke away from the Football League. The aim was to negotiate their own broadcasting and commercial deals, and they soon signed a lucrative contract with Sky Television. The first season under the new name was 1992-93, and Manchester United won the first title. The league has twenty clubs, with promotion and relegation to and from the Championship, and became one of the most-watched sports competitions in the world. Its wealth has attracted leading foreign players and managers, as well as investors from abroad.
