Rila National Park is the largest national park in Bulgaria, covering most of the Rila mountains in the south-west of the country, and it was created in 1992. The range contains Musala, which at nearly 2,900 metres is the highest peak in the Balkans, as well as glacial lakes, including the Seven Rila Lakes, and forests of spruce and pine. The park shelters brown bears, wolves, chamois and many bird species, as well as plants found nowhere else. The historic Rila Monastery, founded in the tenth century and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lies within the mountains. It is a popular area for hiking and skiing.
