Establishment of Sundarbans National Park

1984

Sundarbans National Park is a protected area in the Indian state of West Bengal, in the Ganges and Brahmaputra delta, and it forms part of the world's largest mangrove forest, which extends into Bangladesh. Its network of tidal channels and islands is the home of the Bengal tiger, one of the few tiger populations adapted to a swimming and mangrove lifestyle, and of estuarine crocodiles, river dolphins, fishing cats and many birds. The tigers sometimes attack people who enter the forest to collect honey, wood or fish. The park was established in 1984 within a tiger reserve and biosphere reserve and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Rising sea levels and cyclones are a serious threat to the region.
