Establishment of Plitvice Lakes National Park

8 April 1949

Plitvice Lakes National Park in central Croatia is known for its chain of sixteen terraced lakes joined by waterfalls and cascades. The lakes were formed as water flowing over limestone deposited travertine, which builds natural dams that keep growing. The area was declared a national park in 1949, making it one of the oldest in southeastern Europe, and in 1979 it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Forests of beech, fir and spruce surround the lakes and shelter bears, wolves and many birds. In March 1991, the park was the site of one of the first armed clashes of the Croatian War of Independence.
