Establishment of Great Himalayan National Park

1984

The Great Himalayan National Park lies in the Kullu region of Himachal Pradesh in northern India, in the western Himalayas. It covers steep valleys, glaciers, alpine meadows and forests, ranging from low elevations to peaks above five thousand metres. The park protects rare animals such as the snow leopard, the Himalayan brown bear, the Himalayan tahr and the western tragopan, a threatened pheasant. It was created to conserve this biodiversity while allowing local communities, who had traditionally collected herbs and grazed animals in the area, to adjust to new rules. The park was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2014.
