Establishment of Komodo National Park

1980

Komodo National Park in Indonesia lies in the Lesser Sunda Islands, in the province of East Nusa Tenggara, and includes the islands of Komodo, Rinca and Padar along with many smaller ones. It was established to protect the Komodo dragon, the largest living lizard, which is found nowhere else in the wild. The park also protects the surrounding seas, with coral reefs, mangroves and a great variety of fish and marine mammals. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1991. Tourism has grown, which has brought money for conservation but also pressure on the dragons' habitat.
