Creation of MATLAB

1984

MATLAB, short for matrix laboratory, began as a program written by the mathematician Cleve Moler to give students easy access to matrix software libraries without having to write Fortran. Jack Little and Steve Bangert recognised its commercial potential, rewrote it in C and founded the company MathWorks, which released the first commercial version. The language is built around arrays and matrices, and offers tools for plotting, numerical analysis, signal processing and simulation. Later additions such as Simulink allowed engineers to model dynamic systems graphically. MATLAB became a standard tool in engineering and scientific research and in university teaching.
