Kim Jong-un was born on 8 January 1984 in Wonsan. The Supreme Leader of North Korea, Kim Jong-un came to power in December 2011 on the death of his father, Kim Jong-il, becoming the third member of the family to lead the country after his grandfather Kim Il-sung. Under his rule North Korea has carried out repeated missile and nuclear tests, drawing United Nations sanctions, and has tightened internal control, including the execution of his uncle Jang Song-thaek in 2013. He met leaders of South Korea and the United States in 2018 and 2019, but talks on denuclearization produced no lasting agreement. His government has been widely criticized for human rights abuses. Outside observers know relatively little about his early life.
