The 2023 Marrakesh-Safi earthquake was a magnitude 6.8 earthquake that struck the High Atlas mountains of Morocco late at night in September 2023. Its epicenter was in the province of Al Haouz, southwest of Marrakesh, and it was the strongest quake to hit the country in modern times. Nearly three thousand people died, mainly in remote mountain villages whose houses of mud brick and stone collapsed, and tens of thousands of homes were damaged. Rescuers struggled to reach isolated areas because of blocked roads. The historic medina of Marrakesh was damaged, and reconstruction of the affected villages continued for years.
