Establishment of Teide National Park

22 January 1954

Teide National Park is a protected area on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, centred on Mount Teide, a volcano and the highest peak in Spain. Mount Teide rises above a vast volcanic caldera, Las Canadas, covered with lava flows, pumice fields and strangely shaped rocks. The park was established in 1954, one of the first national parks of Spain, and it is among the most visited national parks in Europe. Its harsh high-altitude environment supports unusual plants, including the Teide violet and the Teide white broom, as well as many insects found nowhere else. UNESCO recognised it as a World Heritage Site in 2007.
