Establishment of Kevladev National Park

1971

Keoladeo National Park, near Bharatpur in Rajasthan, is a famous wetland and bird sanctuary in northwestern India. The marsh was created in the eighteenth century by the local ruler, who dammed a depression, and for a long time it served as a private duck-hunting preserve for the maharajas and their guests. It was declared a bird sanctuary in the early 1970s and later given national park status, and it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985. The park is a winter refuge for tens of thousands of migratory waterfowl from Central Asia and Siberia, and it holds many resident species such as storks, herons and pelicans. Its water supply has been a long-running concern.
