Establishment of Niokolo-Koba National Park

1 January 1954

Niokolo-Koba National Park is a large protected area in southeastern Senegal, along the Gambia River and close to the border with Guinea. The area was set aside as a reserve in the 1920s and became a national park in 1954. Its habitats of savanna, gallery forest and wetlands shelter lions, leopards, elephants, hippopotamuses, chimpanzees and the Derby eland, the largest antelope in Africa. It was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981, but poaching, illegal gold mining and the effects of a planned dam brought it onto the list of sites in danger in 2007. Conservation efforts have continued to protect its wildlife.
