Establishment of Northeast Greenland National Park

22 May 1974

Northeast Greenland National Park is the largest national park in the world and covers a large part of the northeastern region of Greenland. It was established in the 1970s and later expanded to its present vast size, protecting a landscape of ice sheet, glaciers, fjords and arctic tundra. The area is very sparsely populated, with only a few research stations and a military outpost. It is home to musk oxen, polar bears, walruses and many birds, and it has been visited by expeditions since the early twentieth century. The park is part of the Danish realm, and Greenland's self-governing authorities manage access to protect its fragile environment.
